The annual release of fixtures is always eagerly anticipated by the Leeds Trinity University cricket team with players spending a lot of time looking at the match-ups.
This year LTU will once again face university teams from Hull, York, Newcastle and Sunderland as well as the introduction of Huddersfield.
On the back of a second-placed finish last season resulting in promotion, the Lions are once again filled with optimism and hope following yet another good intake of first year players. This is coupled with the players who have performed time and time again for the team during their studies at Trinity.
Captain Dominic Farr said about the first years: “They have fitted in really well with the side and it is a mixture of batters and bowlers, which could lead to a few selection dilemmas.”
Another aspect which is new to the Lions this year is that they have finally secured a grant to play at Horsforth Cricket Club, and given its proximity to Trinity it will be somewhere that can truly be regarded as “home”.
Dom went on to say about the grant: “It’s great for supporters, and is a really nice ground.”
Social secretary Danny Carr has arranged some memorable nights out this year with the team, the latest one being an army-themed night out in Headingley, then on into Leeds. The socials have been a way for the team to bond, making them a great icebreaker for new members. This is also a useful tool against the opposition as the Lions pride themselves on having a strong team spirit.
Having three home games this year may prove influential because if the team performs well, they will have the chance to seal it on home turf.
The opening game of the season for the Lions is on April 26 at Horsforth Cricket Club against University of Huddersfield Men’s 1st.
