Huddersfield give a good account of themselves in defeat in preparation for Newcastle on Saturday

Wednesday saw the 2017 FA Cup Quarter Final line up completed with Manchester City strolling to a 5-1 victory over a spirited Huddersfield side, after an early scare as ex citizen, Harry Bunn took the lead for the terriers in the seventh minute.

Although he did not get on the ball too often after that, the 24-year-old put in a good shift and summed up the boss’ gegenpressing philosophy.

Huddersfield should not be dispirited by the defeat as they were facing some of the world’s most potent attacking threats with goals always expected.

Pep Guardiola fielded a near full string side valued at nearly £280m, with David Wagner then Huddersfield boss putting a side out wary of the task which faces them on Saturday against Newcastle at John Smith Stadium. A win for the Terriers will cut the gap to three points off automatic promotion, and turn up the heat on Brighton with a real show of intent if they pull off what would be an unexpected win.

One shining light for Huddersfield was Phil Billing who gave a good account of himself at the Etihad. He has grown in confidence this season and is looking more and more assured on the ball with every minute of football he plays.

Wagner should take confidence in his decision to rest players for the game on Saturday because although the defeat is still a defeat, the players who came in gave a good performance and remained competitive despite Man City continually breaking them down defensively.

Wagner told the BBC: “We have shown too much respect, unfortunately, against a very strong Manchester City side.”

Going into the Newcastle game with a squad that has had time to recover from the 1-1 draw with Barnsley may prove pivotal and influential in Huddersfield’s chances of replicating the 2-1 away victory they achieved earlier on in the season at the Magpies.

With 7,200 fans making the 27 mile trip across the North-West, Huddersfield will be praying that it is this type of support that buoys the players to deliver Premier League football next season whether that be automatic promotion or via the play-offs.
